  • Overview

    The Student Support Service Advisor recruits, interviews, advises, and coaches students who meet the U.S. Department of Education guidelines for TRIO. The SSS Advisor will provide direct services related to improving persistence, graduation, and transfer rates of disadvantaged students, particularly those who are low-income, first generation college students, disabled, and/or academically deficient. This is a grant-funded position.

    Responsibilities

    • 20%        Recruits, interviews, and evaluates potential students.
    • 20%        Coaches students in goal setting, time management, self-advocacy, and study skills.
    • 20%        Plans, coordinates, and presents various college coaching workshops including, but not limited to, financial literacy, financial aid, career exploration, course selection, and degree planning.
    • 15%        Assists students in developing individual action plans to increase their chances of graduating from the College.
    • 10%        Administers student assessments to determine academic and personal needs in support of ongoing student success.
    • 10%        Maintains all necessary documentation related to program implementation, tracking, and evaluation.
    • 5%          Performs other job related duties as assigned.

    5. Works as an effective member of the Student Support Services team.

    Qualifications

    • A Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, psychology, social work, or related field.
    • Minimum of one year of experience in a related area.
    • Prefer a minimum of two to three years of relevant experience working with a TRIO program or similar related project for disadvantaged and at-risk college students.
    • Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential elements of the job.
    • Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the college for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation.
    • High level of sensitivity to target populations.
    • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.
    • Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting project participants.

    This position requires three professional references. This position is considered a security sensitive position and will require a criminal background check.
