Writing Center Staff:  Provides instructional aid and tutoring to students for academic and professional writing.

 

This is a part-time position of 19 hours or less per week with an hourly salary of $20.00.

Responsibilities

  • 40%  Tutors students in person or by email. Assists students with study skills and helps with limited and basic technical needs.
  • 15%  Aids Corequisite students in College Preparedness in the Writing Center and Integrated Reading and Writing (INRW) corequisite lab environments.
  • 15%  Supervises and trains peer tutors.
  • 15%  Prepares handouts and supplemental data.  
  • 10%  Maintains accurate records of students assisted and manages student printing and printing funds.  
  • 5%   Performs other related duties as assigned by Writing Center Coordinator.

Depending on availability and experience, Writing Center Staff may also be offered the opportunity to assist with or adjunct a section of INRW 0210.

  1. Demonstrates the Viking Values of balance, clarity, gratitude, service, teamwork, and trust.
  2. Provides friendly service in the writing center. 
  3. Keeps current in Writing Center theory and practices.
  4. Collaborates with the English faculty.
  5. Participates in professional development and stays current in both the professional field and in current teaching/learning best practices.
  6. Maintains confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Acts (FERPA).
  7. Complies with all state and federal laws and regulations relating to higher education.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in English or related field, such as Communications or Journalism is required.
  • An MA in English or related field, such as Communications or Journalism is preferred.
  • Experience with Adult Education, Corequisite program or College Readiness programs is preferred.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and explain concepts to students of varying academic backgrounds and levels of writing.
  • Patience and encouragement when working with students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
